The characters are real and recognisable – which doesn’t mean to say sympathetic – Idos is crass, iconoclastic, sarcastic and atheistic, Butes is the arch food-snob, Hercules is a generous but loud and boorish pederast and Jason himself is a sulky, selfish, petulant pretty-boy.
