This was one of the more interesting plays we had as a primary text in our Drama Theatre Performance module but the entire play is just pure depressing. Depression is not an easy topic to read about, even when it is portrayed in compelling formal prose as in The Bell Jar. Her other earlier work has been highly praised and received rave reviews, 4.

Her writing is honest to the point of disturbing, and the only way i can describe it is like witnessing the last moments of someone’s life, where they watch their entire existence flow before them, and sharing in that moment. And even if it harbors death through a andia mind, it still felt so full of energy and life.

It’s her own private therapy session, or an emotional release. In many ways, her play is kaen and unforgiving. It is one of the few books I’ve read that captures the pain of mental illness, and I’d be curious to see how directors would adopt this as a theatre piece considering there are no stage directions given This was written for you, rejoice.

Pain, passion and pungent moments of remorse, detestation, loneliness and self-hatred litter throughout the pages like diary entries strung together; moments of mental breakdown pulled from her subconscious and laid bare for the world to see.

Auriane rated it it was ok Apr 01, It’s beautiful, it’s dark, it’s funny, it’s tragic, it’s morbid, it’s complex, it’s to-the-point, it’s hopeful, it’s hopeless, it’s logical, it’s chaotic, it’s saraah, in your face, it’s the truth. Her command of szrah and slurs of thought is simply astounding. Want to Read saving…. It’s not the words of a victim.

Her writing is sharp and not for the faint of heart, and deals mainly with physical and psychological pain. I’ve never read anything like this before. Open Preview See a Problem? A difficult but worthwhile read, I would also recommend seeing this play if you can stomach the very bleak and harrowing content.

However, one not afraid of breaking the mould, Kane allows her ow Dark, destructive, and consistently uncomfortable, Kane’s work reads like a heavy meal; difficult to digest and sarwh in your stomach, but riddled with an impact that leaves you feeling both morbidly queasy and fully satisfied, all at once.
